LibreOffice Writer is the free and open-sourceword processor and desktop publishing component of the LibreOfficesoftware package and is a fork of OpenOffice.org Writer. Writer is a word processor similar to Microsoft Word and Corel's WordPerfect with many similar features, and file format compatibility.[4][5]
LibreOffice Writer is released under the Mozilla Public License v2.0.[3]
As with the entire LibreOffice suite, Writer can be used across a variety of platforms, including Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows.

- Feb 20, 2012 I had the Document Image Writer in Microsoft Office 2003 where I would save in Microsoft tiff format (.MDI). After upgrading to Office 2007 this feature is gone. Nor do I have a Document Image Writer reader for my existing.MDI documents.
- I have a file that was created using Microsoft Word. It had some images in it. When I tried to view/edit it in LibreOffice, the spaces where some of the images were has an empty space with the words 'Quicktime and a decompressor are needed to see this picture.'
